Waste Reduction is important for our environment, our climate, and our
wallet. Waste reduction involves thinking about what we buy, use, and
throw away. With 95% of the waste in our society produced during
resource extraction and manufacture of products, it is important to
examine what we use in your everyday life and take into account the
enormous amount of waste created just to make those products.
The waste from your home is a small portion of the total waste, but is
still significant. Americans produce an average of 4.6 pounds per day.
After we reduce and reuse, there may be materials that can be recycled. Backyard composting is an example of local recycling: food waste and
yard waste is made into a new product: compost! Composting is easy and
fun, and does not smell or attract animals if done properly.
Helen Freilich, Waste Reduction Specialist, presents backyard
composting information and has examples of compost at different stages
of "production". She is assisted by volunteers with the Clallam County
Master Composters, trained in the art and science of
composting.
Recycling information is also be available, including copies of the
popular "Recyclopedia" for Clallam County.
